What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine uses a variety of tools and techniques to find and treat the causes of disease and discomfort. Naturopathic doctors are trained in the following modalities:

Nutrition: Naturopathic doctors receive extensive training in clinical nutrition, diet management (including weight loss and specialized diets for various conditions), and the proper use of vitamins and nutritional supplements. We will design a diet that is tailored to the unique tastes, health issues and cultural backgrounds of our patients.

Botanical Medicine: NDs are also educated in the safe use of both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine herbs to increase health and treat diseases. Herbs may be used in pill, liquid tincture, cream and whole forms.

Physical Medicine: Naturopathic doctors learn a variety of assessment and treatment techniques to heal and repair injuries or misalignment of the spine, bones, ligaments and muscles. These include naturopathic spinal manipulation, acupuncture, soft tissue massage and treatments and hydrotherapy. Dr Handford is certified in acupuncture.

Lifestyle coaching and counselling: NDs acknowledge the power of the mind in healing and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and are trained in counselling and wellness coaching to support our patients’ healing journey.

Homeopathy: Homeopathic medicine is a European form of alternative medicine which has been around since the 1700s. It uses minute amounts of substances at high dilutions to stimulate the body’s own ability to heal from disease states. Homeopathic remedies are prescribed based on the symptoms presented and are generally safe and effective, even for children and pregnant or lactating women.
